"SOS truly partners with families to find long-lasting solutions to their needs. They want families to be safely and stably housed--but they also want the parents to be empowered and the children to be thriving."

Support for Parents

Homeless parents work toward regaining stability in their families. We offer them regular home visits and develop plans for parenting and children’s needs. Parents also participate in support groups, lead by social workers, in order to strengthen bonds with their children, overcome challenges they encounter as parents, and increase their knowledge of their child’s development so they can become empowered in their role as parents. In addition, they connect with other parents in similar situations. We provide the following groups for parents:

  • Playing…Learning…Growing Group: Parents and children, ages 0 - 5, meet once per week for approximately eight weeks. During the session, each parent engages in activities with their child to enhance developmental tasks for young children.
  • Family Relationships Group: Parents and children, ages 0 - 12, meet once per week for approximately 10 weeks. Families eat dinner together, and afterwards parents meet in a small group while their children go to a designated activity. Children, ages 0 - 6, are supervised in the daycare. Kids, ages 7 - 12, participate in a social skills group which uses activities to help them work on issues such as identifying and expressing their feelings, maintaining positive relationships, and increasing self-confidence.
